What Is Differences Between Crowns And Veneers?

Today, I want to talk to you a little bit about what a pediatric dentist is AKA Dentist for kids. You may ask why there is a difference between a pediatric dentist and a general dentist. But, I want to explain what pediatric dentists are and what makes us unique.

Pediatric dentists have a lot of experience working with kids who are medically complex and learned how to completely restore a child’s teeth. Pediatric dentists must complete a 2 – 3 year speciality program. They have a lot of experience with all kinds of patients. They have specialized knowledge of children teeth and jaw development. They provide special attention to your children sensitive teeth.

Children have unique needs. For example, their teeth are more receptive to cavities, and missing teeth is part of their developing process. Not only do they have different dental needs, but children also behave differently than adults. Pediatric dentists have extensive and unique experience in talking with children, dealing with their emotions, and easing their fears. Part of the practice process involves working in a dentist with children and dealing with extreme dental cases, so no challenge is too big for a pediatric dentist.

A couple of things that seem to surprise people are: one, cavities are not genetic but they can be contagious, so it’s important to make sure that you don’t share spoons or kisses on the mouth if you have a lot of cavities.

The best thing that you can do to prevent cavities for your child is to make sure you have a healthy mouth as well. Another thing we will talk about is diet and the importance of making sure the last thing that touches your children mouth and your mouth at night time is a toothbrush.

Pediatric dentists are well versed in communication and behaviour management for the most finicky kids. Pediatric dentists know how to talk to their patients and educate them on how to maintain strong, healthy teeth. We can help children break bad habits like thumb sucking or prolonged pacifier use.

It is scary to visit the dentist for some adults and even more for children. But pediatric dentists take extra steps to ensure children feel comfortable while visiting. For instance, we use smaller dental equipment than general dentists would. They are specially designed for a children mouth, so they are more comfortable and some of the children struggle to sit still during dental exams and cleanings. We know how to put your child at ease, allowing the necessary care. The last thing we want to children avoiding dreaded dental visits in the future due to a negative experience.

Regardless of who you choose to take care of your family’s smile, whether it be a general dentist or a pediatric dentist, what matters is that you’re comfortable that this is someone who can take care of you and your family for a lifetime of smiles.
